The Making of “Larry: The Musical”

People so often tell me I remind them of Paul Shaffer that the one time we appeared in the same video, I grew facial hair to avoid confusion. This was an industrial, and there’s a wonderful documentary, Bathtubs Over Broadway, that explains what an industrial is. The Making of “Larry: The Musical” is a mockumentary about a stock brokerage that decides to put on a big Broadway-style industrial musical. The part of the composer, lyricist and musical director went to me. I also was the composer, wrote most of the lyrics, and musical directed. So quite a stretch.

The video was screened at the firm’s annual convention in Las Vegas to tumultuous applause. Most industrials serve a commercial purpose; they’re musical comedies meant to sell something to industry buyers. This was a bit different: entertaining the employees, with inside jokes and some self-mockery. Nobody was encouraged to buy anything, really, although I wrote a jingle for the opening number.

The video won multiple awards; I’ve a really bulky statue on top of my bookshelf. But I’m not certain what I can share here. This was work-for-hire; I do not own my songs. I sold them to the company and the company no longer exists. So… enjoy! …but don’t tell anyone.
